The Industry's Past

Apples have been grown in New Zealand since 1819, and exported since 1899. Improvements in Shipping, Cool Storage, Apple Variety, Processing and Export Markets have lead to the industry growing into what it is now.

The Industry's Future

Future success for the New Zealand Apple industry will depend on many local and global factors. Business, as usual, will not enable the industry to stay at the pinnacle of efficiency, quality and profitability, particularly as growers in Chile, Washington and South Africa invest in new technologies in order to gain a competitive advantage.
